One Day Premiers 2011-2012

2011/12 Best Club Person - Lynda Harrison and Chris Pentland

Well done to Lynda Harrison and Chris Pentland for being announced as the 2011/12 best club people. The committee was unable to split the two when it came to deciding the winner, so for the first time we had a tie.

Lynda has done a magnificant job this year. In her second year as treasurer, a job which she has performed brilliantly, Lynda also helped out in many other areas of the club including filling in as junior coordinator at the start of the year, helping out in the canteen, scoring for the juniors, and completing team manager duties for the juniors. She has done an amazing amount of work for the club this year and the club is ever so grateful. Thank you Lynda for all your efforts.

Chris has also had a great impact on the UBCC this year. Even though he missed most of the first half of the season, his impact in the second half warranted this award. Chris made himself available for coaching of any and all juniors on his return and in doing so organised specialised training sessions during the back half of the season. Chris, along with his wife Kristy, also organised our most successful fund raiser for quite a few years. They combined to coordinate the Clover Cottage night in which the club was able to raise around $6,000. A sensational effort and one that the UBCC is very thankful for, well done Chris on all your efforts.

Buddy Award Winners for 2011/12

Well done to Tamsyn Pentland and Shawn Flegler on taking out this year's Buddy Award.

Noblet Award 2011/12

Congratulations to Dan Brennan who has been crowned the 2012 Fred Noblet award winner. He received 21 votes and polled in 10 matches for the season to pip Shawn Flegler on 19 votes and Nathan Dooley on 17 votes.

2011/12 Milestones

The club also wishes to recognise individuals who reached significant milestones during the past season. Richard Edwards played his 300th match in round 7 against Lang Lang. Rob Hansen reached 250 in round 14 against Nyora while Shawn Hassall notched 200 games in the Grand Final against Clyde in the Sub District. David Taylor managed to pass 4000 runs for the club during the past season. A significant batting achievement over an extensive career.

Grand Final Wrap - One Day Premiers

Mixed emotions from the weekend's results, with the One Day boys grabbing an exciting win off the last ball of the day and our Sub District guys unfortunately being out played by Clyde.

In one of the best finishes to a game of cricket that most of the spectators have seen, the Upper Beaconsfield One Day team chased down the imposing score of 171 off 35 overs with a brilliant single off the very last ball of the day. Describing the events of the last ball in words is a task that even the best sporting journalists would find difficult, even the great up and coming Julian Bayard would struggle to paint the picture but this lowly scribe will give it a shot.

Needing one run to win with one ball remaining Paul Ridsdale took guard sizing up all scoring options as he surveyed the field. With adrenaline flowing through his veins and the bowler delivering the ball all logical thought left "Rizzo's" mind. The only scoring option that he could see was a towering six over mid wicket, where a push to the off side would have done the job. In his desire to bring up the win in style "Rizzo" let fly with an almighty swing. The force of which propelled his upper body into a twist that would not be out of place in a diving contest. Flinging the bat past the ball with colossal speed, "Rizzo" felt his feet leaving the safety of Earth and his back facing the prospect of a thunderous collision with the same piece of turf that his feet had just left.

As he crashed to the ground the non striker, Shane Brown, completed his task of making the crease at the batsmen's end. That left the battered body of our fallen hero, Paul Ridsdale, with the task of dusting itself off and making haste for the bowler's end. During this time, with the batsmen unable to place bat on ball, the wicket keeper gathered the ball and attempted to shatter the batsmen's wickets. Missing, another Kooweerup player was able to grab the ball and attempt a run out at the bowler's end. In all the excitement "Rizzo" was able to piece himself together and head towards the safety of the bowler's crease. With the gathering throng of Kooweerup players at the bowler's wickets someone forgot to nominate who was actually going to take the ball and break the stumps. At that moment the ball flew past the group of players and made its way towards mid on. Pumping his legs and arms in harmony "Rizzo" stretched out his right arm with bat extended as the fielder backing up gather and threw for the stumps. His attempt was in vain as "Rizzo's" out reached bat found its destination and the winning run was complete.

Not sure of what just happened, the crowd waited for a response from the players to see who had actually won the game. As "Rizzo" raised his arms in triumph the UBCC crowd rejoiced and the long celebrations began. An ending to this game could not have better scripted, with those watching struggling to come to terms with what had just taken place.

Although "Rizzo" was the man to complete the winning run the real hero of the day was man of the match Dave Bond. He came to the crease with UBCC in trouble at 4/46 and hit a match winning 51 (retired). He had great support from Shannon Scott (17) and Paul Hogben (29), as they combined to crawl UBCC back into the game. Earlier in the inning Dean Olsson (20) and Slawek Kwasnievoski (14) were able to take the score from 2/6 to 2/45 before both fell in quick succession setting the scene for Dave Bond and co.

On the bowling side the key players were Slawek Kwasnievoski who took 3/27 from his 6 overs, Sean Young 2/37 from 6 overs, Dean Olsson 1/15 from 6 and Shannon Scott 1/34 from 6 overs. A fantastic result for the guys who have built a solid unit over the past two seasons. Well done and enjoy the celebrations.

A more sobering experience greeted the Sub District boys over the weekend. They were out played by a better team over the weekend as they went down to Clyde by 217 runs. An unfortunate result given their stellar season. There were few highlights for the boys, but the best performers with the ball were Jayden Joyce with 4/44 from 18 overs and Shawn Hassall 3/65 from 18 overs and the only player to reach double figures with the bat was Lauchy Henstock with 24 runs. Sunday was a day the boys would rather forget and therefore a day that we would rather not report. So we say well done to the Sub District team on their great year which featured some fantastic results from our younger members of the club.

Thanks to everyone who supported the UBCC this year, especially our sponsors. We hope to see all of you next season as we try once more to reach for premiership glory.

New 'Young' Life Members

It seems that Life Members are no longer the ‘older’ generation any more. Three new Life Members were inducted at a Dinner held in their honour last Saturday Feb 25th at the Cardinia Hills Golf Club.

David Taylor, Luke Williams and David Mitchell were bestowed with the honour of Life Membership having qualified as the latest to earn such an award.

David Taylor, former club Secretary as well as Treasurer has now played 185 games for the club over a period in excess of fifteen years. The son of club stalwart as well as Life Member, Bob Taylor A.S.M., David has loyally served the club in many capacities. "I have always regarded the club as a place where our families grew up together with people like David Mitchell and Luke Williams as we learned the traditions of life as a Maroon." commented David on receiving his award.

David Mitchell has reached the milestone of 176 matches having been a Vice President, Chairman of Selectors, Committee person as well as captain of the first eleven during his tenure at the Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club. He too, as his father Colin did before him, was nurtured through the family traditions of the club, first as a junior then later as an influential senior player. "I love Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club," he admitted, "and it will always mean something special to me."

The third inductee was Luke Williams. Part of a trio of brothers who played with the club Luke managed 174 appearances as a senior, having journeyed through the system of junior cricket. Luke became Chairman of Selectors – Vice President, committee man as well as a club captain during his growth toward Life Member status. "My son is almost ready to commence a playing career," said Luke, "and I guess I am almost ready to take on a coaching role like those before me."

Guests acclaimed the new inductees and celebrated the achievements of the club throughout the evening in what is fast becoming a rich tradition at Upper Beaconsfield.
